Raw, non-film forming oils such as mineral oil, Tung oil, linseed oil, or “mystery” oil as you may have discovered will penetrate into the wood and look “finished” for a while until it evaporates. As you’ve probably also discovered it will water spot, won’t stand up to common household spills and requires time-consuming maintenance.
Waterlox Original Tung oil finishes can be applied over mineral or vegetable oil after the countertop has aged for a minimum of 30 days in adequate ventilation. Waterlox will provide superior protection against use and common household spills and will be water resistant.
