Generally speaking, properly finished wood with Waterlox Original Tung oil finishes will stand up to casual pet accidents (e.g. wiped up immediately or soon after the accident occurs); however, we are unaware of any clear wood finish that will stand up to chronic accidents. Chronic accidents are those left unattended for longer periods of time (e.g. days or months); and/or those held close to the finished surface by being absorbed through a rug, carpet, under a potted plant, dog bowl, etc. where it’s not allowed to evaporate.
Pet urine consists of a number of chemicals and chemistries raging from pH, proteins, ketones, bacteria, fats, and enzymes to even yeast. All of these added up in different combinations and percentages equal a fairly caustic mixture that can harm almost any clear wood finish available on the market today. Pet saliva consists of mostly water; however, it also contains natural enzymes that aid the digestive system to break down organic material (food). The potency of the mixture is dictated by your pet’s diet, body size, age and general health. Because of all of these variables, it is difficult to predict the results of how the “accident(s)” will affect the clear wood finish.
